but remembering more clearly now, the WASTE text engine worked by  
provided a precompiled library for use free of charge, even for  
commercial use, but then charged a subscription for access to the  
latest code for those who needed to hack it more directly.

something broadly similar actually wouldn't be a bad model for  
DrawKit.   Im not sure exactly how it would work, but maybe it would  
be possible to differentiate between the 'core' that would come  
precompiled and some of the other classes to which anyone using it  
would probably need access to allow subclassing etc.

not sure, but it is an interesting thought, it would provide a nice  
way to differentiate between different types of users without having  
to probe their email for clues.
