It's a feature - each new layer's selection colour is initially set to  
the next in the cycle of light blue, red, green, cyan, magenta,  
orange. You are not seeing all of them because each drawing creates  
several layers and the colour isn't used by all types.

I have wondered if this ought to be made a bit more regular though -  
but you can always set a layer's selection colour to whatever you want.
